Description

Novel 1984

Imagine a society in which there is no law, what do you think that society is like? Imagine for a second you were transposed into the karmic driven world of Earl.

“If the course of history does not change, human beings will lose their humanity,” says George Orwell.

The novel of 1984 depicts the border between these two societies with a special delicacy and opens your view to an anti-utopia society.
The subject of this book, like the novel Animal Castle by the same author, is political, and many believe that these two books are complementary.

In the 1984 book by George Orwell, the main character is named Winston Smith. He is trying to fight oppression in a land called Oceania, where a dictatorial party called “Big Brother” monitors all the activities of the people.

In such an atmosphere, Winston dares to take action against common personal prohibitions by writing his thoughts on paper and communicating with a girl named Julia.

These so-called criminal and illegal actions of Winston made him an incompatible offender, and he had to correct his different thoughts against his inner desire and look like the others by keeping a cover or participating in public activities.

In fact, writing and communicating with the opposite sex is not considered a violation of the law anywhere, but if the government found out about these activities, a 25-year sentence and working in a camp would await the offender.

In his 1984 book, George Orrell describes life without freedom in Oceania as follows: Big brother is watching over you.

In the 1984 novel, the world includes the three great nations of Oceania, Eurasia, and Stasia.
Winston Smith is the main character in the story, who lives in London (Oceania).

The political system of the country is such that at the head of the power of its leader, the “big brother”, other divisions of society include high-ranking members of the party, ordinary members of the party and the working class.

Oceania is always allied with one of the two existing countries and at war with the other.

All government departments are divided between four ministries; The Ministry of Truth deals with news, entertainment, education and the arts, the Ministry of Peace deals with war, the Ministry of Love is responsible for maintaining law and order, and the Thought Police is the strongest and most dangerous Ministry of Love agent in Inquisition. And identify criminals;

The fourth ministry, the Ministry of Abundance, is responsible for economic affairs and rationing.
In this structure, the people do not have the right to take notes and record anything, and the government is constantly changing all the contents and writings of the past and adapting them to the present; As if there is no wrong prediction or news.

There is also a device called a speaker page in the home of all party members, which is both a transmitter and a receiver at the same time.

The main traitor to Oceania is a man named Goldstein; Who was once a high-ranking member of the party and almost always a big brother, ‌ but was suddenly sentenced to death for his revolutionary activities, but mysteriously escaped and disappeared;

People also said that he had a secret organization called the “Brotherhood Association”.

Winston (the main character of the story) is an ordinary member of the party whose job in the Ministry of Truth is to correct the news, newspapers and letters of the past and to adapt them to the current situation.
But he hates his “big brother” in his heart, and one day (in an illegal act) he secretly buys an old notebook and starts writing his thoughts in it.

Because of the ban on writing and recording memoirs, Winston vaguely recalls his past and that of his family.

In the continuation of the story, Winston meets a member of the party named Julia, and despite the prohibition of romantic relations between the members of the party, they enter into a relationship.

After a while, the two decide to start a fight against the party and meet a man named O’Brien (a high-ranking member of the party) whom Winston thinks is a member of the Brotherhood;

They meet O’Brien and become members of the Brotherhood, and O’Brien gives them Goldstein’s secret book to read.

But O’Brien is in fact the party’s agent for intellectual crime, and it will not be long before Winston and Julia are arrested.
Winston experiences all kinds of mental and physical torture, and in Room 101 by O’Brien and under physical and mental torture, he finally admits that there is no truth other than what the party says.

After his release, Winston gets a part-time job in the ministry, and one day he accidentally sees Julia on the street and realizes that he is no longer interested in her.

At the end of the story, Winston, seeing the image of “Big Brother” in the news, realizes that he has fallen in love with “Big Brother”.

According to the book, two films of the same name have been made, with an older version directed by Michael Anderson released in 1956 with a different ending than the book, but a more successful version directed by Michael Radford.

The film, made with complete fidelity to the original work, was released in cinemas around the world on December 14, 1984 and won six awards at international film festivals.

The 1984 novel is one of the top ten novels of the twentieth century and is always on the list of the 100 books that should be read before death.
The book has been translated into more than 65 different languages and has sold millions of copies, making George Orwell a prominent figure in world literature.

This book seems to me to be a kind of prophecy, and while it was written about 60 years ago, it is very close and similar to the current world.

In fact, the cameras in the corners of the city remind me of telescreens. There are also many other cases in the society today and I see that they are familiar to me and remind me of 1984!

I do not write any more that if anyone intends to read this book, nothing less than its fascination.

In his 1984 book, George Orwell paints a picture of the anti-utopian community. Eric Fromm, a German sociologist, explains the two concepts of utopia and anti-utopia in the introduction to his 1984 book, translated by Hamid Reza Baluch.

An image that had no place in literature before Orwell.
The term utopia or utopia was first coined by Aristotle in The Republic, in his book The Republic he describes his ideal society and places various categories such as teachers and poets in their own classes.

The concept of utopia became very popular in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, after the Renaissance. Thomas Moore’s book Utopia became very popular in those years.

In this book, Thomas Moore had a positive outlook on the future and envisioned a hopeful and self-reliant spirit for future human beings.

Orwell’s 1984 book depicts a completely opposite concept to Thomas Moore’s utopia. Although there is an utopia in 1984, its characteristics are not only positive and hopeful, but also dark, negative and totalitarian.

In this book, Orwell shows the helplessness and despair of today’s man. Thus Orwell’s depicted community can be called an “anti-utopia”.

What is the genre of the 1984 novel?
There are two theories for choosing the genre of George Orwell’s most famous writing. The first theory is those who divide this book into science-fiction, and the second theory is those who place this book in the category of political fiction.

The use of symbolic names for ministries is one of the subtleties of Orwell’s writing. The Ministry of Truth, for example, is, by Orwell’s definition, a place where events are changed and new facts are created. The Ministry of Abundance is also where the food and supplies are rationed.

In addition to the symbolic name, all the characters in this book also have symbolic characters. For example, “Big Brother” is a symbol of a dictatorial system. A government that monitors people’s lives and controls everything they do.

The book’s symbols are not summed up in letters, and George Orwell has hidden his main symbols in the margins of his text, such as freedom of thought against control, friendship against betrayal, and political freedom against repression.

The point that comes to mind after reading 1984 is whether it is possible for circumstances to change in such a way that man forgets his desires for freedom, honor, perfection and love?
