Description

The Chips Are Down of Jean Paul Sartre deals with the atmosphere of Paris and France during World War II in a romantic context. In this play, Sartre, like his other works, tries to convey deep philosophical concepts.

The story of this play is about a man and a woman who lived together without knowing each other and somehow died and became interested in each other in the afterlife. The Chips Are Down tells the story of the lives and deaths of Eve and Piper. Eve is killed by her husband because the man intends to marry Eve’s sister and take all the family wealth. Pierre was also shot dead. Ev and Pierre’s love only makes them regret and regret why they did not meet sooner. This play is not a simple love story, but it is supposed to tell us about the hardships and impossibilities of human life and destiny.
Jean Paul Sartre The play was published in 1947 and tells the story of Paris during World War II. This book is one of Sartre’s lesser-known plays, which is worth reading to get more acquainted with the thoughts and ideas of this great philosopher and writer.

Who is Jean-Paul Sartre?
Jean Paul Sartre is one of the most prominent French intellectuals of the twentieth century. In addition to writing, he was a philosopher, screenwriter, playwright, journalist, political activist, and critic. Another reason for Sartre’s importance is that he can be considered one of the pioneers of the school of existentialism.

He was born Jean-Paul Charles Imar Sartre on June 21, 1905 in Paris. In his works, Sartre tries to deal with philosophical concepts, and this issue is very much reflected even in novels and plays. Among his works, we can mention infected groups, nausea, Satan and God, the age of reason, and so on. Sartre lost his sight in the last years of his life and finally died in 1980.

What does the philosophy of existentialism mean?
The philosophy of existentialism or existential originality has become very popular in recent years and has gathered countless followers, but this philosophy is not new in terms of principles and has been followed by Eastern and Western philosophers for a long time.

Existentialists believe that in all periods of history, all people, without exception, have more or less felt that existence is not based on anything and only makes people fear and accept the unknowns, that is, they always believe that malice always believes. Has been and will be the ruler.
Existentialists believe that belief means malice, because man can never understand the secret of existence as a real source, so a person who believes in certain principles certainly has malice, whether these principles are religious or ideological, followers of this philosophy with prejudice. Wherever it arises and whatever it relies on, they oppose it and believe that the oppressed person is not prejudiced in terms of his own existence and inwardly, but pretends to be so, and this pretense is the same as malice.

In a part of the play, we read:
In the living room next to the bedroom, a young girl is standing in front of a window that opens onto the alley, looking into the alley. The footsteps of soldiers can be heard from the street and this sound is getting closer every moment. Andre Charlie enters the living room and closes the door. At this moment, his face is taken and it indicates his inner entanglement. He turns his head at the young girl with the sound of closing. She is beautiful and young, and may be about seventeen years old, and although her face is sullen and gloomy, she still looks a bit childish.

Outside, the sound of soldiers’s boots pounding the floor has filled the air with the sound of a dry, rhythmic military anthem.
The young girl closes the window with a sharp movement and it is obvious that she can hardly keep her cool. He turns back and says in an angry tone:

There has been a small parade since morning

Andre takes a few steps and stands near one of the benches with a hypocritical look, showing himself to be indifferent to him. The young girl comes to him and questions him with anxious looks.

Andre raises his head and looks at the girl, and with a gesture and frown that seems to indicate his belief and submission to fate and destiny, he says:
he is sleeping.
Do you think it will get better?
Andre does not answer.
