Part of the book Nightmares

Stuart speaks softly to Mr. Crane’s voice. “It’s ridiculous at all. That is, how do we know what work to choose? Of all that in the museum …? » He glanced at Timothy, “Choose for yourself, it doesn’t make much difference to me.”

Timothy shook his head. “It doesn’t matter to me,” he said under his breath.

To his right he heard a strange tapping sound. For a moment he thought that what was in the glass was really shaken; Then he quickly realized that the sound was not from the ledge on the wall, but from the back corner two rows away. The newcomer girl had something lying under her couch. He rested his left ankle on the thigh of his right foot and stared at what he was holding at the bend of his knee. Timothy heard the knock again and saw a small flame of a silver lighter burning between the girl’s fingers.

Mr. Crane picked up a notebook and a pen from his desk and said, “Let’s group you.”

When the teacher started and asked each student who he would like to work with, Timothy turned his eyes to the newly-arrived girl in the last row, who just as quickly opened the lighter. Until then, he had not paid attention to the girl, just like the laboratory samples above his head. The girl had only been to this school for a month. He was silent and did not talk to anyone. Wearing gray clothes: sweatshirt, jeans, linen. If it did not have thick and tangled red hair, it might have completely merged with the wall. The next time the girl lit the lighter, Timothy was surprised to see her holding the lighter in front of her leg. The flame rose from his white sock and then went out on its own. If the creature in the glass jumped down the ledge above the girl’s head and sat on her feet, Timothy would be less surprised.

“What a dirty day,” Stuart said, noticing the fire in the corner of the classroom. Timothy was so fascinated by the girl that she did not pay attention to her friend. “Isn’t it?” Stuart patted Timothy on the shoulder.

Suddenly, the girl’s brown eyes looked at her, and Timothy realized he had been exposed.

“Abigail Tremens 15?”

The girl took the lighter in her fist and looked in front of the class; Where Mr. Crane was standing and staring at him. “Yes?” He said.

“Who do you like to work with?”

“Eh …” Abigail lowered her head and looked at her desk. “I … oh … I do not know.”

Mr. Crane carefully looked at the careless faces of the children. Everyone was silently waiting for him to continue. “Can someone please volunteer to work with Abigail?” “We should all have a group.”

Abigail seemed to melt in her chair out of embarrassment.

The class did not answer.
