Description

Hollywood is a novel by Charles Bukowski, first published in 1989. Henry Chinasky, Bukowski’s fictional self, is pressured to turn a half-life book into a screenplay. He reluctantly accepts the responsibility and sets foot in a strange and unfamiliar world called Hollywood. There are many controversial books about life in Hollywood, but none are as poetic and risky as this novel. The Hollywood book can be considered a narrative account of Bukowski’s experiences in writing screenplays.

During his ups and downs from a poet to a screenwriter, Chinaski encounters a number of well-known movie stars and exposes the absurdities and narcissism of some in the film industry.

Heinrich Charles Bukowski (August 16, 1920 – March 9, 1994) was an American poet and novelist. Bukowski was born in Andernach, Germany. After the collapse of the German economy following World War I, his family moved to Baltimore in 1923. After graduating from Los Angeles High School, Bukowski spent two years at the University of Los Angeles, taking courses in art, journalism and literature. At the age of 23, he published his first short story in a magazine.

Hollywood, the heart of the American film industry, has always been known for elements such as wealth, fame, such splendor, limousines of several tens of meters, red carpets that are rolled up and folded, and of course a lot of alcohol and drugs. Becomes. It goes without saying that they also make films from time to time!
If you get to know Charles Bukowski, you will find that the character of this impatient old man is in stark contrast to the lavish, gesturing life of Hollywood. Now imagine reading about three hundred pages of the result of this personality-space paradox between Bukowski and Hollywood. Probably (or rather, definitely) the Hollywood novel is the most personal work by Bukowski. Even more personal than the poems that make up a large part of his literary career. Because Hollywood, in fact, is an important part of Bukowski’s life.

Alcohol, and of course a wife who has the same and permanent sensible personality type, form the motifs of the story. Motifs that Bukowski sees as more important than anything else in his life. A drink that opens the writer’s brain chakras to write a screenplay that is supposed to be a success, and a wife who may be the safe haven of this old man who drinks constantly, watering flowers and feeding cats every day.

The Hollywood Book is by Charles Bukowski.
The book is a documentary that tells the story of Bukowski writing a screenplay and then turning it into a film.

The story goes that Barbeque Schroeder, Bukowski’s friend, asks him to write a screenplay. A script of his choice with any subject he likes.

Bukowski does the same and you write the script. But turning this script into a film has involved many stories and adventures, to the extent that after the end of the film, Bukowski decides to write a novel about it.

This book also somehow shows the troubles of making a Hollywood movie.

In this book, the author presents a humorous narrative of turning a screenplay into a film, in which he mocks almost everyone. He changed some names and not others. At the beginning of the book, Bukowski writes:
This novel is just a work of fiction, and any resemblance between the characters in this book and any living or dead person is completely coincidental, and such things.

The story of this book is narrated by Henry Chinaski, who is Charles Bukowski himself.

Bukowski wrote more poetry and wrote fewer novels; In this book, he also mentions in different parts how much he loves poetry and takes refuge in it. But I think Bukowski’s humor is great. It has its own style.

At the very beginning of the book, I was confronted with this pure humor of Bukowski, and I enjoyed the humor of the book until the end.

The good thing about Bukowski’s books is that they are full of dialogue; Classy and wonderful dialogues. In fact, this book does not have a strong or exciting story and is just a narrative of writing a screenplay and making a film. But the same dialogues and humor of Bukowski make you not get tired of reading the book and follow it with pleasure.
If you have not read the popular novel by the same author, I suggest you read the Hollywood book first and then go to the popular one. By reading the first Hollywood book, you will become more familiar with Bukowski’s humor, and then you will enjoy the text of the book in a very popular way.

This book was translated by Peyman Khaksar. A first-class and very good translation that you will enjoy reading. (Of course, I personally encountered difficult words and translated the meaning of several words in Dehkhoda dictionary !!)

Another thing the translator has done is to collect the real names of the people in the novel at the end of the book.

Bukowski’s screenplay
After reading the book, I turned to a film written by Bukowski and directed by Schroeder.

The name of the movie is Barfly, which is translated in the book Kharabati. This film is made in 1987.

Ruins in Dehkhoda dictionary means someone who travels in ruins and houses and is a ruler.

The film “Barflay” is the story of Bukowski himself in his youth. That’s why I endured and looked at it until the end !! The first role in Mickey Rourke was very annoying and I don’t think he could play a drunk at all.

Excerpts from the Hollywood Book
The document comes out of it, right? Or at least we wish he would come! Take the document from us, we are dead! Think how much we run in our lifetime! The earth absorbs it, but the seas and rivers swallow them when we swallow our shit! We are dirty, dirty! I hate us all! I hate all of us every time I clean!

I have two rules for myself. Rule number one: Never trust a man who smokes a pipe. Rule 2: Do not trust a man who wears shiny shoes. “The one who did not smoke a pipe.” “But he was like a pipe-smoker.”

Do not let anyone tell you anything else, life starts at 65 years old.

In the writing profession, one finishes sooner than in any other job.

I believe that those who do not think much will stay younger.

In the land of blind mice, a blind mouse is king. So who deserves something? No one deserves anything.
It can be said that Victor Norman was the most famous American novelist. The TV was showing it all the time. His language was fluent and he was a master at using words. What I liked most about her was that she was not afraid of feminists. He was one of the last defenders of eggs and masculinity in America. Such a thing required courage.

The book “Hollywood” is by Charles Bukowski and translated by Peyman Khaksar, which is presented in Persian. The Hollywood book was formed in such a way that Bukowski wrote a screenplay during his career at the behest of his friend Barbe Schroeder. The Hollywood novel is a humorous account of the process of writing a screenplay and making a film. In this novel, Charles Bukowski jokes with many people. Some have changed their names and some have not. According to the translator: I have changed the names in the index at the end of the main book and the unchanged names in the footnotes.

Excerpt from Bukowski’s Hollywood book:
“I love that the nation works for me for free! I love it!”

“But… this is not true… These are a few months of work at last! You have to give them something! ”

“Well, I owe them 15 thousand…”

“Only 30,000 for their couple…”

“But this is impossible…”

“Nothing is impossible…” he looked at me: “Who is this cove?”

“He is the author of the script.”

“He’s an old man.” I will deduct ten thousand dollars from his salary… ”

“No, his account and book are with me…”

“Then I will deduct ten from you and you will deduct ten from this.”
