Description

The Tennessee Williams The Glass Menagerie is a depiction of the problems and frustrations of three-person families in American urban and industrial society, and is told in the language of the son of the family, who some say is a symbol of the author himself. The play won the New York Critics Circle Award in 1945.

Introducing the The Glass Menagerie book
The thought invaded her mind to find a young man for Laura. The young man’s imaginary face cast a shadow like the ghost of a vague monster in the apartment. Rarely did a night pass without a word from this creature, from this spirit, from this hope of our family. If it had not been mentioned, his thoughts would have been on my mother’s confused face and my sister’s frightened eyes and my sister’s innocent behavior, as if it were a court order to convict the Wingfield family.

About the The Glass Menagerie book:
In a low-income American family, siblings Tom and Laura live with their mother, Amanda. The father of the family, who was not bound by the responsibilities of family life, has recently left his wife and children alone and gone nowhere.

Each member of this family of three lives in vain fantasies and emotions. The mother has nothing to do but praise her past successes. After 50 years of her life, she still wanders in the memories of her 17 years and her young lovers, and her son only writes poetry, watching movies in the cinema and neglecting his main profession. The idea is to leave home and work and become a great writer.

Laura, the only daughter in the family, is probably the only one left with no fantasies left. She is a girl who is one foot shorter than her, and this organ defect has taken over her soul so much that all her courage has been taken away from her and she has been replaced by a knot of humiliation. Suffering from severe physical disability in his right leg, he lost contact with everyone around him, collected several small glass sculptures of animals, and built The Glass Menagerie for himself in a part of the house. And he talks to them.

The mother, worried and anxious about her daughter being left alone, asks her son to invite a young boy to their house for dinner with his co-workers in a shoemaking workshop, so that he may be able to find a wife for his disabled daughter. Tom reluctantly accepts the request and invites one of his co-workers, Jim, to dinner.
The young man, full of enthusiasm and hope for life, spends a few minutes alone with Laura, proposing to her to boost her self-confidence and get out of her lonely cocoon.
The Glass Zoo, the first successful and great Tennessee Williams play, was first published in 1945. Over the years, he wrote many texts and some of his works were really valuable in terms of quality. However, none of them were better than the glass zoo play. Because this play made him the most important playwright after the war. The grandeur of the Glass Zoo as a work of art and a human statement lies in Williams’s vision of individuals, society, and the dimensions of people’s religious experiences, which balances it subtly and poetically.

The movie Here Without Me, directed by Bahram Tavakoli and starring Fatemeh Motamedaria, Negar Javaherian, Saber Abar and Parsa Piruzfar, has been adapted from this play.

Learn more about Tennessee Williams:
He was born in 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi. His father was a traveling shoe salesman and was often away from home. Tennessee was not considered a fit young man for having diphtheria as a child, which is why his father always humiliated and insulted him. Her sister became psychotic after an operation on her brain and was hospitalized in a psychiatric hospital for the rest of her life. Many critics and historians believe that Tennessee took most of his story ideas from his troubled family, and that the impact of his life and experiences can be seen directly in his work.

In his third year of college, Tennessee dropped out of school to work in a shoe factory. In 1939, he received a $ 1,000 scholarship from the Rockefeller Foundation to write the play Battle of Angels. Williams became famous with the publication of the Glass Zoo in 1945. He wrote the play inspired by the relationships that govern his own family. The play was staged in Chicago during the winter of 1944-1945 and was well received, and also won the New York Critics Circle Award for Best Performance of the Season.
In 1947, he once again succeeded with the release of the tram play Lust. He wrote the plays Cat on a Hot Roof in 1955 and Sweet Bird in 1959.

By 1959, Tennessee Williams had won two Pulitzer Prizes, three New York Critics Circle Awards, three Donaldson Awards, and one Tony Award. In the early 1950s, he became more and more popular with the public with his cinematic adaptations of his two plays, The Glass Zoo and the Tramway, entitled Lust. In 1974 he won the St. Louis Literary Prize from the St. Louis Library, and in 1979 he entered the American Theater Hall of Fame. He died in 1983.

In a part of the book Glass Zoo, we read:
It is dark inside the apartment. There is dim light in the alley. As the scene begins, the church bell rings and announces five o’clock.

Tom appears at the end of the alley. After each roar of the tower bell, there is a full applause; It is as if he declares his omnipotence in the face of the small power of man in the face of power and greatness. It turns out that he is intoxicated by this work and his unbalanced progress. As he climbs the fire escape stairs, he lights up inside the apartment. Laura, dressed in her pajamas, looks at Tom’s empty bed in the front room.

Tom looks for the key in his pockets. In the process, he pulls out various things, such as chains from movie theaters and an empty bottle. Finally finds the key; But he loses it until he tries to lock it. A match lights up and bends.

Tom: (angrily) What the hell are you missing!

Laura opens the door.

Laura: Tom! Tom! What are you doing?

Tom: I’m looking for my key.

Laura: Where have you been so far this night?

Tom: Cinema.

Laura: Ever?

Tom: Their plan was long. It was a film by Garbo; One from Mikimaus, one about travel, breaking news and future plans. One by one, he builds a citadel and collects my money to buy milk for poor children … which was badly fought between an obese woman and a cinematographer.

Laura: (Innocently) Should you have seen them all?
