The architect’s apprentice was published in 2013 in Turkey. This novel is important because it examines a part of the history of the Ottoman sultans. Instead of the novel, traces of people from different cultures can be seen. People from different religions, each of whom participates impartially in the adventures of the story. Shafak’s special attention to Islamic architecture and the relationship between the domes and high minarets of mosques and mysticism and theology is undeniable.
The relationship between the architecture of the building and the individual themes of the architect Sinan and the world, which has a perspective on the spiritual evolution of man to reach God, is one of the themes of my novel and my master. Perhaps by introducing the architect Sinan and the world into the story, Elif افafak also had an idea about the relationship between Murad and Shams.
Synopsis of me and my teacher:
This book is a historical novel whose story revolves around the character of “Jahan”, an Indian boy who is sent by the King of India to the court of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman with his elephant. The world meets and falls in love with the king’s daughter Mehr in the palace of Sultan Suleiman. His secret meetings with the Sultan’s daughter coincide with the world’s acquaintance with the architect Sinan, who is one of the famous architects of Sultan Suleiman’s court and who built many mosques and historical monuments of that time. Along with the architect Sinan, he learns the art of architecture and participates in many wars with him and builds bridges and mosques.
My novel and my teacher is a narrative-based story. Some of the characters in the story are real and some are imaginary. Shafak tried to advance the story with a social and mystical theme. This book is an attempt to reconcile religions and bring nations together.

About the author of my book and my teacher, Elif افafak:
Alif Shafak; The Turkish writer was born in 1971 in Strasbourg, France. His mother was a diplomat and for this reason Shafak has experienced life in different cities of the world. In 1998, he won the Rumi Award for his book “Hidden” and in 2000, he won the award for the best novel of the year by the Turkish Writers’ Association for his novel “Muharram”. Shafak has published dozens of novels, all of which have been translated into several languages.

“Me and My Master” is a novel by the French Turkish author Elif افafak (1971). In 2010, he was awarded the Knight of Literature and Art of France. The works of this author have been translated into thirty languages and have been published by famous publishers such as Viking, Penguin, Rizuli, etc. Shafak is a writer who has spent much of his life in various cities around the world, including Madrid, Oman, Cologne, Boston, Michigan, Arizona, Ankara and Istanbul, due to his mother’s special job as a diplomat. Certainly, his attention to different peoples and cultures is evident in most of his works, and the novel “Me and My Master” is an example of the multicultural life of this master writer.
Using a language that combines narrative and dialogue, the author places historical characters alongside the novel’s two fictional characters, Jahan (a boy from India) and Philash. Instead of the novel, there are traces of people from different cultures, people of different religions, each of whom participates impartially in the story’s adventures. Elif افafak’s concern in this novel is neither to retell history, nor to heroize, nor to defend the identity of a particular people. He tries to dig into the truth.
In his view, superstition, dry religious prejudices and fanatical ethnic identities are destructive of human civilization. The story takes place during the reign of the three Ottoman kings, Sultan Suleiman, Sultan Suleiman and Sultan Murad. In this novel, Istanbul is the focus of Elif افafak; A magical city built on hills; A city where the protagonist of the story arrives with his arrow and, unaware of the adventures and destiny that will change his life from here to there, finds his way to the palace of Sultan Suleiman and … From the text of the book: Maybe inside every person, an unknown human is hidden. Which shows itself in the most tense and unexpected moments. The human heart is like the celestial bodies that Monjam Taqiyya al-Din observed. No one knew what secrets he had hidden deep inside. Not only is the sky above us mysterious, in fact each and every human being is a great mystery.
