Description

The novel Strait is the Gate, first published in 1909, is a novel that deals with the failure of love in the face of the dilemma of Protestant moral philosophy. A lovely Parisian boy named Jerome Policie spends summers at his uncle’s house in the Normandy suburbs. There, Jerome falls in love with his cousin, Alyssa, and discovers that Alyssa is also interested in him.

But Alyssa gradually becomes convinced that Jerome’s love for her threatens the well-being of her young cousin, and for Jerome’s salvation, she decides to suppress everything she sees in herself [whether mental or physical]. Hide. The novel Tang, based on Freud’s analysis, uses childhood experiences and misunderstandings between the two to advance. The novel in Tang is also a reconstruction of the memory of Andre Gide’s failed engagement to his cousin, between 1888 and 1891.

Excerpts from the book Strait is the Gate

If you argue with a woman, the card has been dealt and you have completely lost.

God, you know I need Him to love you. God, give it to me so that I can give you my heart. God forgive me this indecent prayer … I have neither the power to say his name nor the power to forget the pain of my heart …

I want to tell you something: Jerome, I love Juliet like crazy! – Good! Did you express love? – No, no … I do not want to flip through the sweetest chapter of the story.

Andre Gide (1869-1951) is a French writer and winner of the 1947 Nobel Prize in Literature. Jade is a style writer who has a beautiful, distinguished and remarkable style, a style that is claimed by a number of Western writers to be based on the classic heavy and strong style.

Jade always said that a real writer is someone who swims against the currents and requirements of the daily life of his environment and society. Gide himself had really done that, and as long as he was alive he would do whatever he wanted, ruthlessly, rudely, and even unaware of the consequences. Gide says of his writings: “My writings and works can be seen as Achilles’ spear, which healed after the second contact with the bodies of people he had previously wounded. If you are upset, upset, or even upset by reading any of my books, read it again; “I was careful to hide the antidote just below the poison, which is quite obvious …”

“In Tang” shows a girl’s refusal to surrender to love and affection, which stems from the dry Christian religious beliefs, in which Jade condemns the unnatural excesses of mankind in observing religious and moral standards. “Dar Tang”, like most of Gide’s works, has a personal story and its mythical theme takes place in his own adolescent environment. The writing style of this work is unique in terms of cleanliness and eloquence and is among the best and most complete works of Gide.
