Description

Steppenwolf is a self-portrait of a man who feels half wolf and half human at the same time. This pseudo-Faust and magical story is a testament to Hesse’s philosophical quest and transcendental sense of humanity, as he himself describes the humanity of a middle-aged elusive human being. He considered, as Hesse himself puts it, “Of all my books, The Wolf of the Desert has been the most misunderstood.”

The book was first published in 1929, but its wisdom still speaks to our souls, so it can be considered a classic. Harry Haller is a sad and lonely figure, a modern intellectual who does not enjoy life. He seeks to reconcile the wild wolf and the rational man within himself without succumbing to the bourgeois values that he despises. His life changes dramatically when he meets a woman named Hermione.
The Guardian writes of the book, “Given all its eloquent descriptions of torment and isolation, but it’s eloquent about something much more important: healing.”

Part of the book Steppenwolf
Suddenly I had the same thoughts as before. A golden, light-hearted work that suddenly disappeared quickly and out of reach. I was shaking badly. I searched for that work in the world of imagination and kept walking. I was burning with the desire to find a door that would take me to a magical theater that only lunatics were allowed to enter. I arrived at the market area, which was not lacking in terms of night entertainment.

In every few steps, on the boards hanging on the wire, there is an inscription to attract the attention of the audience: Women’s Orchestra, Colorful, Cinema, Dance Hall. But I did not like those hobbies. They belonged to “everyone” and to ordinary people who entered those places in groups. At the same time, watching those sights reduces my sadness and unhappiness. A message from another world shook me a little. A few colorful words of light and dance played with my soul and sang with its hidden harmonies. Yes, there are still signs of that golden effect.

Steppenwolf

I went to the old humble pub. That place has not changed since the first day of my stay in that city, that is, twenty-five years ago, and the owner of the pub was the same old lady.
Some of the customers were the same people who had been in the same places before and in front of the same bottles. I entered the pub. It was a suitable shelter similar to the shelter in front of the steps next to the pine tree. I did not like it there and I did not feel comfortable in it. I just sat in front of the stage as a spectator and watched the artistic performance of unknown people. Of course, the same quiet place also had values.

There was no hustle, bustle, or music. A number of middle-class people sat comfortably on wooden tables without marble, or polished metal, or silk or shiny brass tablecloths, and even ordinary tablecloths.
In front of them is a glass of soda that was accidentally tasty and reliable. Perhaps the few old and regular customers I knew of were apparently petty, poor people who built humble altars in their poor homes for the gods of happiness and contentment, and perhaps, like me, a homeless and deviant man, a thoughtful eater. And they were silent, sitting in mourning for their bankrupt thoughts, or perhaps considering themselves desert wolves and poor people. In any case, I did not really know why they came there because of the strange pain, frustration, and the need to replace it with another phenomenon.

The married man came to the place eager to understand the celibacy period and the elderly employee eagerly reminisced about the student period. Almost everyone was quiet and just drinking, like me, they preferred to have a bottle of Alsace in front of them, rather than a group of women musicians. I stayed there. Everyone was allowed to stay there for an hour or even two hours.
