On the Meaning of Life is undoubtedly one of the most important books by Will Durant, author of The History of Civilization. This book is considered a special book even among philosophical works, and even the manner and motivation of writing it has its own story.

The story of writing a book about the meaning of life:

This is the story; Will Durant was one of the most well-known writers and historians of his time; One day a fashionable man came to him and said, “I intend to commit suicide and I see no reason to continue living. “As a philosopher, give me a good reason not to do this.”

Durant was a little surprised, but with his words he sought a way to dissuade the man from his work and give him a reason to live, but none of Durant’s words could convince the man to continue his life.

Eventually, this great writer decided to do a little research on suicide, and the results made him think, and the question arose for him: “What is the meaning of life?”

He asked this question to a hundred people, including many of his contemporary philosophers, writers, and celebrities. Will Durant received many answers, some thoughtful and some interesting because of the respondent’s personality. For example, someone like Bertrand Russell, one of the great philosophers, replied: “I’m sorry to say that life is too busy for me to think about right now … I do not seem to be able to judge the result of discovering the truth. “Because no truth has been discovered so far.”

Why we should read a book about the meaning of life:

This book is compassionate yet quite realistic and helps you to look at the issue of life and its meaning through the eyes of a variety of people, from great philosophers and writers to a prisoner.

Learn more about Will Durant:

Will Durant is a great writer, historian and philosopher of the twentieth century who was born in 1885 in the United States. He is the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Medal of Freedom, and he has left very valuable works, among which we can mention such things as the history of civilization, the history of philosophy, the heroes of history, the pleasures of philosophy, and so on. Selected sentences about the meaning of life:

– Man must combine action with thought to achieve a valuable life.

– It is love that binds one to another. I think this is the reason for life. Love for family comes first.

– A good life is an end that we should love and enjoy for its own sake, and work and intellectual effort should be to promote a good life. This is the little philosophy in which I keep my little mill moving.

Because some of us are healthy, should we turn a blind eye to the fact that thousands of people are suffering daily?

In a part of the book about the meaning of life, we read:

“What makes you not give up and keep going?”

– I think food, and maybe fuel. We are basically heat engines that work on the basis of quantity and quality of fuel until part of the machine wears out and breaks down.

“What are your sources of inspiration and energy?”

Again, food, and how the body uses it. For example, two years ago I lived in and around New York for a while, mostly on meat and water.

During that time I was considerably more optimistic, looking forward to the next day and the next year, and I was more eager and refreshed than when I was eating only regular mixed foods. Other sources of inspiration are good weather and sleep. But you, as a philosopher, may want to emphasize spiritual inspirations. There are such things.

My main inspiration is the feeling that if there is to be something fundamentally valuable, it must be to increase and disseminate knowledge. It is not clear that gaining knowledge from universities and (ecclesiastical) Sunday supplements has taken or given me more.

If no one has found the meaning of life, no one has proved that life has no meaning. What is probably meaningless is the question of whether life has meaning. Wilhelmore Stephenson

Part of a book about the meaning of life
The growth and spread of knowledge, for which so many idealists and reformers prayed, ended in frustration that has almost shattered the spirit of our generation.

Astronomers have told us that human activity is only a small moment in a star’s trajectory; Geographers have told us that civilization is nothing but a short and unstable period between the Ice Age and the present;

Biologists have told us that all life is war and strife and residual conflict between individuals, groups, nations, allies, and species; Historians have told us that progress is a notion whose glory ends in inevitable decline;
And psychologists have told us that the will and the self are powerless tools derived from inheritance and the environment, and that the incorruptible soul is nothing but transient inflammation of the brain.

The Industrial Revolution destroyed the home, and the discovery of contraceptives destroys the family, the elderly, morality, and perhaps – through the futility of intelligence – generations. Love is analyzed in terms of physical density, and marriage is transformed into a temporary psychological comfort that is only slightly higher than sexual incontinence. Democracy is so corrupt that only God knows;

And our youthful dreams of a socialist utopia, with this greed and insatiability that we see in people, are fading more and more every day. Every invention makes the strong stronger and the weak weaker; Every machine routine takes the place of humans and fuels the fear of war.

William James Durant, better known as Will Durant, famous writer and historian, was born on November 5, 1885.
“History of Civilization” is the title of Will Durant’s most important work, which has been published in eleven volumes. Wisdom – The Age of Louis XIV – The Age of Voltaire – Rousseau and the Revolution – The Age of Napoleon.

Durant dictated the contents of the book to Ariel. The couple were so interested in each other that in 1981, after Durant was taken to the hospital, Ariel did not stop eating until she died when she heard from the doctor that her husband had little chance of surviving.
Durant’s heart also stopped moving after hearing that Ariel had died, and the couple were buried together in one day. Ariel was 13 years younger than Durant and a former student.

The thinker of the history of civilization in this collection has examined the history of human civilization with an analytical look. This collection is written by translators such as; Ahmad Batahi, Ahmad Aram, A. Pashaei … has been translated into Persian.

Prior to writing History of Civilization, Durant wrote Principles of Wisdom and Contemporary Social Issues.
