Herman Melville was born in 1819. His formal education ended in 1834 at the age of 15. He was a school secretary and teacher for a while, but the sea was his first love. Herman became the servant of a merchant ship bound for England. Then, in 1841, he joined the crew of a whaling ship, where he learned a great deal about writing the book Moby Dick.
Melville was influenced by the writings of Nathaniel Hawthorne and introduced him to Moby Dick. Herman felt that Hawthorne reflected in his writings a vision of human nature that few could have.

Melville left the islands with an Australian fishing boat, but his life on the fringes was not over. He went to prison after taking part in a riot. But he, who had the experience of escaping from a ship, escaped from prison this time after a short time with a group of his comrades and went to “Tahiti”, one of the important islands of the Pacific, and lived among the natives of that region for a while.
Melville wrote The Emo in 1847 based on his memoirs of that time. After some time, he left for “Hawaii” on another fishing boat and then returned to his country to serve in the army. At the age of twenty-five, he gave up sailing forever and spent most of his time writing stories.
Melville’s works were not very popular during his lifetime, but like many prominent writers in the history of world literature, his books and writing style were so well received that literary critics named him one of the foremost writers of American classical literature. Herman Melville wrote seventeen long and short stories during his seventy-two years. He was writing the story of “Billy Bad” which did not give him time to finish this story.

I can not say exactly why I chose to hunt whales. We sometimes do things for no apparent reason. Their head was the white ghost of a large whale with a curved jaw. His whole body was full of crooked harnesses, rusted, the animal stuck in the strings and fragments of thousands of wrecked boats. When the captain was not working on his surveillance hole, he would go downstairs to his room and check his plans. So I walked over and took a quick look at that private temple that was the captain’s room. The room was clean and tidy, with bookshelves on the wall, a shelf of firearms, and a glass cupboard full of bottles and scientific items. Then the messy bed in the corner of the room caught my eye. All the sheets were tied together and thrown around as if a wild animal was sleeping there. Later, when I asked the attendant about this, he said that the captain never fell asleep completely. He always struggled like an angry whale for an hour or two, trying to fall asleep, then getting up again and shouting for his clothes.
