Excerpts from Abolhassan Ebtehaj’s diary

At the meeting that day, Aramesh gave me a copy of the nightly newspaper he had published. In this nightly, Aramesh strongly criticized the Shah’s rule, saying that the monarchy should become a republic. I asked him how he had taken such dangerous steps. He replied that he had deposited copies of all the documents in a Swiss bank and had ordered them to be published after his death, and that the agency was aware of this. After this meeting, there was no more news of calm until I found out a while later that he had shot at a police officer in one of the city parks and had been killed by law enforcement officers. With my acquaintance with Aramesh, I am sure that he was not a man of guns and shooting … Aramesh was the husband of Sharif Emami’s sister and once worked in the Democratic Party, affiliated with Ghavam Al-Saltanah, and also published the newspaper “Diplomat”. Later, he joined the ministry in the cabinet of Qawam al-Saltanah.
Then I sharply criticized the opinion of the US military advisers in Iran and said that every year when the budget of the Iranian army is published for the next year and I oppose the increase of the cost and I express my opinion to the Shah, the Shah responds to the military officials. The United States in Iran does not even consider this increase sufficient. I said angrily, “God willing, make sure that such contradictions do not occur between the various US officials.” My remarks were so intense that Khodadad Farmanfarmaeian immediately called my wife Azar and said that something was over. Maybe he was right, because a few days later, the powers of the director of the program organization were transferred to the prime minister.
In the winter of 1341, when I was released from prison, several members of the US Embassy in Tehran asked me to visit them … The minutes of this meeting were later sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a report, part of which is listed here. – From the US Embassy in Tehran – Date: January 19, 1963 – Subject: Ebtehaj’s remarks on land reform and economic development – On January 10, Abolhassan Ebtehaj, during a meeting with several US Embassy officials in Tehran, stated that in his opinion Iran It will certainly face a severe political-economic crisis in the near future, as the government, instead of spending oil revenues on development programs, encourages the US government to spend most of its oil revenues on weapons it does not need.
Among those to whom I wrote a letter from prison was George Maggie, who was re-appointed Deputy Secretary of State in the Kennedy administration … In one part of my letter to Maggie, I wrote: Has supported, and this is not something that I or any patriotic Iranian should object to, but what is unfortunate and can even be considered a catastrophe is that your government has contaminated itself with a situation in Iran that the opposition American methods and traditions, including corruption, oppression, disregard for human rights, and the lack of courts that deal fairly with individuals’s charges …
It is unfortunate that your government was fully aware of this situation in the past, but deliberately closed its eyes, and as a result, the Americans, who were once loved, respected and trusted by the Iranians without the help of a monarch, are today There is hatred of many Iranians and most of my compatriots do not trust the Americans … The United States should have no fear of announcing to the Iranian government and, if necessary, the Iranian people that it is no longer a hated government that is discredited by its friends and allies. Is not supported. Such a decisive and courageous decision will change the situation (in Iran).
