Description

Lying on the couch : a novel is another work by Erwin D. Yalom that if you are interested in psychotherapy and existential philosophy, you are unlikely to have heard his name or read his books. In addition to being a renowned therapist, Yalom has established himself as a master in the field of fiction in every sense of the word.

Lying on the sofa is also a book of science and art. The science that Yalom has used for years to heal his patients and the art of storytelling that he has used many times in his books. Dr. Mohammad Reza Fayazi Bordbar – Scientific Editor of the book – In his introduction to the novel Lying on the sofa, you write:

Old Yalom promises deeper awareness in the human mind. Because not only is the doctor, but much more, the old psychiatrist of literature, and he plunges us into a deep imagination. In this sweet ecstasy that early humans called fiction, we experience things that perhaps in the real world, custom and law do not allow us to experience.
As we drink our tea, we lie on the psychoanalytic couch with the Yalom hero and lie with the Yalom character, without hurting our conscience and worrying about his feedback.

The book Lying on the Sofa, this fascinating novel, is a novel before Yalom’s experiences in psychoanalysis. A complete novel with all the controversies and human tensions. Yalom challenges people who have not been able to cope on their own, and their need for a therapist has dragged them to the psychoanalytic couch.

Also on the back cover of the book is lying on the sofa:

Lying on the couch, while confronting readers with the many lies that are occasionally told on the psychotherapist couch, gives them a tempting and somewhat unbelievable view of the therapist’s mindset in their therapy sessions.

Summary of the book Lying on the sofa
This novel is about the connection between three psychotherapists: Seymour Trotter, Ernst Lash and Marshall Strider, with their patients. The main focus of the novel is Ernest Lash, who in his first disciplinary work examines the behaviors of Semirot Trotter with his patient. Marshall Strider is also Ernst’s supervisor.

Seventy-one-year-old Seymour Trotter, a senior member of the American Psychiatric Association and former president of the American Psychiatric Association, believes that therapists should do their best to improve the patient and use a unique approach to each patient.

Based on the same personal principles that Seymour Trotter had for himself, he established an unethical professional relationship with one of his patients, who was forty years his junior and had special circumstances, which eventually led Ernest Lash to represent the ethics committee. Handle his case. In fact, the book begins with a review of Seymour Trotter’s case.

Years ago – let’s say about four years ago – a woman named Bell came into my office, or rather she brought herself into my office – or she threw dirt and mud on herself – yes she did, that’s better.
He was in his mid-thirties and came from a wealthy Swiss-Italian family. He was depressed and wore a long-sleeved blouse in the summer. He had self-harmed and wore a long-sleeved dress to cover the cut on his wrist.

Dr. Lash, if you see a confused patient wearing long-sleeved clothes in the summer, always think of cutting your wrist or injecting medicine. She looked good, her skin was good, her eyes were seductive, and she was neatly dressed, but she was on the verge of collapse. (Lying on the sofa – page 14)

The study of Seymour’s case is a short part of this book, but the influence that Seymour has on Ernest will remain with Ernst until the end of the book.

In the rest of the book, Ernest Lash’s relationship with his patients is narrated. Ernst also follows certain principles in his work, principles that persuade him to have a completely honest and frank relationship with his patients, which even sometimes causes him to reveal himself to his patients.

Ernest’s most affected patient is Justin Astrid. Someone who comes to Ernest three days a week for five years. At their first meeting, Justin asked Ernest to help end his married life, but Ernest had not been able to persuade Justin to do so for five years.

Then Justin suddenly informs his therapist: “I left my wife yesterday evening. I moved out of the house. “I spent the night with Laura.” “That’s right.” “I do not waste my time when I see that something needs to be done.” These conversations blow the electricity out of Ernst. He had been trying to persuade Justin to do this for 5 years, and then Justin did not waste time and was separated from his wife?

The meetings between Ernest and Justin are very challenging and readable, and even when Justin’s wife gets involved, the story becomes even more interesting.

And finally, among these stories, the story of Marshall Strider with his patients is told. Marshall is also Ernst’s mentor and constantly encourages him to be a professional and to follow principles and rules when dealing with his patients. But Marshall himself, who is involved in his own obsessive-compulsive behaviors, gets into trouble with one of his patients for making money and making a profit.

Lying on the couch : a novel

About the Lying on the couch : a novel
The main theme of this novel is about the relationship between the therapist and the patient.

How can the therapist help the patient the most? After all, the ultimate goal of treatment is to help the patient and improve his condition. But is dry, ethical behavior appropriate for treating all patients, or can you, as a therapist, transcend the boundaries of ethics and professional behavior?

Is it okay to break some principles to improve the patient? As a therapist, does not honesty, transparency, and even self-disclosure help the patient more than pursuing other therapies? Outside of the patient and therapist, how should the two behave? Can they trust each other outside of the patient and the therapist? These issues and many others are addressed in this book in the form of a readable novel.

Yalom says in the book “Yalomkhavanan” about the book of lying on the sofa:

Another important issue in relation to the patient and the therapist in lying on the sofa was the issue of proper boundaries. Can a relationship be genuine and at the same time, formally, severely limited? Do not severe time constraints, formalities and money exchanges damage the authenticity of the relationship?

Is the therapist a friend? Is there love between the therapist and the patient? Can a kind therapist touch or hug her patient? What are the appropriate financial, professional, social, and sexual boundaries for a therapeutic relationship? (Yalom Khanan – Page 516)

In addition to the issues mentioned so far in the introduction to the book Lying on the Sofa, this book is also a fascinating novel that will take the general audience with it. In fact, this is the main feature of Yalom’s novels.
Things like secret flirting, revenge, scams, feelings of inferiority, etc. are other things that you can see in this book. For me, the parts where one of the characters was seeking revenge and lying on the sofa were one of the parts of the book.

But I think the novel is more appealing to audiences who are very knowledgeable about psychology and psychotherapy. In the book, specialized topics are explained by the translator in the footnote, but I personally read the material on the Internet to better understand the different parts of the book. There were issues that I was aware of in depth but did not understand.

For example, in the book, dreams and dreams were defined and then the therapist and the patient talked about it. Clearly, these sections were so deeply debated that I, as someone who did not have much expertise in the field, read only the level of the story and the words.

Erwin d. Yalom writes in another part of the Yalom readers’ Lying on the couch : a novel:

Writing lying on a sofa was like a complete separation from the writings of my previous professions, an adventurous dive into the realm of “pure story.”

In writing lying on the sofa, the truth is mixed with the story. Many scenes have something to do with reality: they are either made up of real events, or they come from it, or they are inspired by such events.

The final point about the book is that the audience can explore their behaviors and actions in the form of Yalom novel characters. Each of us could do the things that the characters in the book do. We could be just as unpredictable or just as vindictive. This book is an opportunity to discover aspects of our personality that we may never have realized.

The translation of this book is a good and fluent translation that also has a good and suitable editing. Adequate and timely explanations also accompany the audience as they read.

Sentences from the text of lying on the sofa
Ernest was not a religious man, but when he opened his appointment office every morning and saw the names of eight or nine people with whom he was to spend the day, he was overwhelmed by a feeling he could only describe in terms of religion. At such times he had a strong desire to express gratitude to someone or something that had led him to his job. (Lying on the sofa – page 9)

I asked him to look very deep inside himself and see if the essence and center of his being believed that the purpose of his existence was to collect money. Sometimes patients want to see themselves in the future – until their deaths, their funerals – even imagine their graves and write their gravestones.

Who was Ervin Yalom?
Erwin Yalom is the founder of the model of ontological psychology. He was the first psychologist who, with his extensive knowledge in the field of psychology and the study of the philosophy of people like Aristotle and Socrates, created a new perspective on the science of psychology and psychoanalysis. He was awarded the American Psychiatric Association Award in 2002.

Using his writing genius, Yalom is one step ahead of other psychologists. He has even been able to engage the general public with simple and interesting stories that tell of his own experiences and those of others in his books, as well as being popular with psychologists and other psychoanalysts.

Yalom believes that in the present time, and given all the possibilities and scientific advances, it is a mistake to want to be content with only the teachings and findings of Jung and Freud. In his view, the human psyche, especially in modern times, has become so complex that we must look for new ways to deal with spiritual and psychological problems.

The main audience of this great writer is young psychologists and young psychologists. His concern is psychiatrists who forget their mission in exchange for increased income or emotional issues and cause more harm to themselves and others.

Relying on his writing abilities, Yalom has been able to express the principles of psychology in the form of interesting and fascinating stories and adventures. So that we do not need to have special knowledge in the field of psychology to read the works of this author.
Interestingly, Yalom claims that he always avoids accepting clients who are involved in love. For him, treating this group of people is the hardest job in the world. He says that perhaps because love is sacred and man loves the blind and the deaf. Or maybe because he himself likes to experience such an atmosphere. Yalom, however, loves his wife dearly and considers her a source of relief for his pains and sufferings.

Lying on the couch : a novelBooks by Ervin Yalom

Yalom’s writings on existential psychology revolve around the four axes of human life that Yalom has dubbed “forgiven.” These four axes are: loneliness, lack of meaning, damping and freedom. In his writings, Yalom explains how man can respond to these four concerns in efficient or inefficient ways.

The book “Lying on the sofa” is a great revelation of Yalom. In this book, he tells real and semi-real stories of psychiatrists and their patients.

Few writers or even psychologists have ever dared to state such facts. In this book, he explicitly shows that many psychologists are patients who wear white robes and make prescriptions.

One of the concerns of this author is death. He says he has often dealt with patients and clients who are constantly living in fear of death and destruction, so that their daily activities are paralyzed and they no longer enjoy life. He wrote “Staring at the Sun” when he felt he had to do something to alleviate the concerns of such people.

With the publication of this book, he was able to change many lives and change people’s view of life and death. His mission in increasing the quality and productivity of life for all human beings in the world is praiseworthy and admirable. Yalom has been interviewed in a documentary called “Flight from Death” directed by Patrick Shen as a psychologist working on fear management theory.

Yalom became known in Iran with the book “When Nietzsche Wept”. After that, the number of fans of this author in Iran increased so much that this author receives many emails from Iranians every day. In response to the invitation of Iranians to attend and speak in Iran, he said that he would no longer travel abroad, that is why he could not come to Iran.

Perhaps the reason why Iranians are interested in this author is that few people in Iran think like Yalom. The genius and creativity of this author culminates in Nietzsche’s book. He cleverly incorporates reality, fantasy, and the principles of psychology into this book, creating an engaging and influential work.

The book When Nietzsche Wept in 2007 is a feature film directed by Pinchas Perry. Also in 2014, a documentary on Yalom’s life and activities was made called Yalom’s Cure.

Yalom is the life hero of many people who need a trusted and wise companion. This great writer has inspired many people around the world and changed many lives.
