Facts that we may have rarely seen in the media. The canning order is one of Steinbeck’s best and most enjoyable works, and like his other works, in a world of reality and fantasy, with a mixture of humor and harsh social criticism, he depicts the lives of the deprived and the afflicted.
Introducing the book on canning
The characters in this story are people who are struggling with miserable economic problems but are looking for small joys that may be a cure for their incurable wounds. In this work, themes such as camaraderie, contentment, morality, avoiding a superficial view of human beings and a sense of nostalgia are emphasized.
The events of the novel “Order of Canning” take place on a street whose margins are full of fish that are to be canned.

This work was first released in 1945, and about 40 years later a film was made based on it. The story takes place during World War II, and the author narrates the indigenous life of the locals: One morning, an old Mr. Kariaga was walking from his hillside house to Alvardo Street.

As he was crossing the short bridge, his attention was drawn to a boy who was arguing with a dog in Masil. The boy had a black liver in his hand and the dog was sucking several billions of intestines, which led to a rupture. Mr. Kariagai paused and said to the boy, “Good morning.” The children were polite in those days.

The boy replied, “Good morning, sir.” Mr. Kariaga smiled and said, “What do you want to do with this liver?” “I want to make bait and catch mackerel with it.” Mr. Karyagah smiled and said, “What dog, does he want to catch fish too?” “The dog found it himself, we found it on the way,” the boy said.

“Mr. Kariaga smiled and walked away, and then his mind began to work. That liver is not a cow, because it is very small. It is not a calf’s liver either. It is very red. It is not a sheep’s liver either. Then his mind became clear. He saw Ray Yan and asked, “Did anyone die in Monterey last night?”

In southern California, in the coastal city of Monterey, in a low-income neighborhood, there is a cannery. Due to the presence of this factory, it is called the neighborhood of canning.

This famous street has been present many times in the stories of different authors, and this time, John Steinbeck has gone to this famous neighborhood with his special tone and humorous language. He paints a picture of the bitter life of the workers and fishmongers in the area, and tells of the economic hardships and fleeting joys of their lives.

About Cannery row  book by John Steinbeck
Many fishermen in the coastal city of Monterey catch sardines. Due to the abundance of fish in the city, a cannery has also been built to convert part of the fishermen’s catch into canned food.
