Description

A Room of One’s Own is one of the most famous books by Virginia Woolf, an English author, published in 1929 at the age of 47. In addition to the importance of writing style, this book introduced unique features in essay prose, and many consider this book to shape the feminist theoretical current, and in particular feminist literary criticism.

The issue of women’s deprivation existed before Virginia Woolf. But it can be said that Wolf is the first to study and analyze this issue. “The Second Sex” by Simone de Beauvoir was also published with a close approach to the book shortly after it was published in a room of its own.

A room of its own; The Story of Women’s Deprivation
Wolf wrote the book after lectures on “Women and Stories” at Newham College and Garten College in the winter of the late 1920s, and after writing an article of the same name in the literary magazine Forum in New York. A room of it was published a year after the lectures.

Wolf was ill at the time and thought of writing this book when he was sick. Virginia Diary shows that she wanted to start writing The Waves, but the idea of writing a roommate did not give up and she decided to write the book in the style of “half dialogue and half dialogue”.
Wolf writes in his diary about writing this book: “I wrote so fast that when I held a pen, I was like a blue bottle that was upside down. I wrote as fast as I could; Too fast. “Now I have to work hard to correct those writings, but this method gives one the freedom to act and allows one to think from one thought to another.”

Sentences from the book Room of Its Own
A woman who wants to write a story must have her own money and room; And this, as you will see, will leave the great dilemma of the true nature of woman and the true nature of the story unsolved. (A room book of its own – page 24)

Why did men drink wine and women drink water? Why was one gender so rich and the other so poor? What effect does poverty have on the story? What conditions are required to create works of art? A thousand questions come to my mind together. (A room book of its own – page 51)
It is in our futility and in our dreams that the hidden truth is sometimes revealed. (A room book of its own – page 59)

It is impossible to imagine a woman in Shakespeare’s time having Shakespeare’s genius. Because there is no genius like Shakespeare’s genius among the workers and the illiterate and the servants. This genius did not arise in England among the Saxons and Britons. This genius does not exist among the working classes today. How, then, could it have arisen among women who, according to Professor Trolian, began their careers before the end of adolescence and were forced by their parents to comply with the rule of law and social tradition? (A room book of its own – page 80)

Literature is full of shredded corpses of men who cared too much about the opinions of others. (A room book of its own – page 89)
Masterpieces are not born alone; The result of years of public thinking is the group thinking of the people; Thus the experience of the masses supports a single voice. (A room book of its own – page 101)

No one could have raised the issue simpler than this. “The poor poet has not had the slightest chance these days, nor in the last two hundred years; the hope of liberation and the intellectual independence in which great works emerge is only slightly greater for a poor child in England than for the son of an Athenian slave.” That’s the problem.

Intellectual independence depends on material factors. Poetry depends on intellectual independence, and women have always been poor, not only in the last two hundred years, but since the beginning of history. Women had less intellectual independence than the sons of Athenian slaves. So women did not have the slightest chance to write poetry. That’s why I put so much emphasis on money and a room of my own. (A room book of its own – page 152)
I urge you to write all kinds of books, and do not hesitate on any subject, no matter how trivial or trivial or important. Hopefully, anyway, make enough money to travel and see the world, reflect on the future or the past of the world, fantasize about books, and wander the streets and let the fishing line of your mind go deep into the river. Because I do not limit you to the story in any way. (A room book of its own – page 153)

I believe that if we live another century – I mean ordinary life, that is, real life, not small, separate individual lives – and each earn پ 500 a year and have a room of our own; If we have the freedom and courage to write whatever we think; If we escape a little from the public living room and see human beings not only in relation to each other but also in relation to reality;
As well as the sky and the trees or whatever it is; If we can look beyond Milton Lollipop, because no human being can ignore this scene; If we face reality, because the reality is that there is no one to rely on and we are alone and dealing with the real world, not just the world of men and women, then the necessary opportunity will be provided and the dead poet, sister Shakespeare will occupy the mold he has emptied many times. And like his brother, he is born and born from the lives of anonymous poets who were his pioneers. (A room book of its own – page 159)

Virginia Woolf; Author and women’s rights activist
Virginia Woolf is one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. The author, publisher and women’s rights activist who went through two world wars during her turbulent life and decided to end her life with stones in her pockets.

Wolfe, full name Adeline Virginia Woolf, was born on January 25, 1882 in London. His father was a prominent literary critic and philosopher. His mother was a handsome woman who performed in the house of busy literary circles. Virginia Woolf, however, inherited her writing taste from her father, and it was her father who aroused an interest in literature in young Virginia and, by encouraging her to study the world’s great literary works, had a profound effect on her literary interests.

The author’s life is deeply affected by the untimely death of his mother; Because of this lack of nervousness, he began to have occasional depressive illnesses that affected his life.
Wolf had two brothers, whom his father sent to Cambridge University to continue his education. But because of the gender discrimination that existed at the time, Wolff was denied this opportunity and trained at home with the help of private tutors. The discrimination he witnessed and later lamented in many articles that women could not go to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge like men.

Wolf’s second trauma during his lifetime was the death of his father. After this incident, Wolff suffered another nervous breakdown, and it was during this period that he attempted suicide for the first time. Although the loss of a father was very heavy for him, he says in some of his articles: “If my father had not died at the beginning of my youth, I could never have become a writer.”
Wolff became independent after his father’s death, traveling and writing in literary and intellectual circles. Studying the works of Marcel Proust and Henry James was very influential in his writing style. Virginia Woolf was an influential member of the British Writers, Intellectuals, Artists and Philosophers during World War I and World War II.

In 1912, Wolfe married her brother’s old friend Leonard Wolfe. They later founded Hookarth Publishing and published works by authors such as Catherine Mansfield and TS Elliott. Interestingly, these two writers were very anonymous at the time, but Wolfe always welcomed the trust of talented young people. His intellectual taste and literary talent were more important to him than his name, position and wealth.

For this reason, many literary critics believe that there are undoubtedly a large number of writers who were influenced by Wolf’s writing style. Today, his books are taught in prestigious universities around the world, both in terms of content and writing style. In addition, Wolf’s feminist ideas about equality between men and women in marriage, education, and employment were instrumental in women’s rights activists.

She and Simone de Beauvoir were two writers who played an important role in advancing feminist activities around the world by publishing their theories of equality.
Wolff, who had lost many of his entourage during World Wars I and II, was frustrated by the recovery from his depression and, seeing that he would not ruin his wife’s life any longer, finished The Between the Scenes and From there, with stones in his pockets, he went to the Oz River and ended his life.

In part of “A room of one’s own” we read:
Should we blame the war? In August 1914, when the cannons were fired, did men and women easily read in each other’s faces that love and affection had been destroyed? Seeing the faces of our leaders in the light of fire (especially for women with dreams and fantasies about education and so on) has undoubtedly been a shocking blow. How ugly, how stupid these leaders – German, English, French – looked.

But whatever or whoever is to blame, the idea that inspired Tennyson and Christina Rosetti to write poetry about their beloved with so much passion is far rarer today than it was then. It is enough to read, look, listen, remember.
But why look for the culprit? If it was a delusion, why not glorify that catastrophe, whatever it was, a catastrophe that destroyed that delusion and replaced it with truth? Because the truth … these points represent the place where, in search of the truth, I turned the corner to Farnham. Yes, of course, I asked myself what was the truth and what was the fantasy.
